GREEN BAY, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Green Bay Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy said he understands the fans’ disappointment over not making the Super Bowl and losing the N-F-C title game at Seattle. And as he put it, “We’re right there with you.”
McCarthy held his season-ending news conference this afternoon, one week after his 47-year-old brother Joe died in the McCarthy family’s home area of Pittsburgh. The coach said the out-pouring of support he received was overwhelming and appreciated — and it came in droves from Packer fans and folks in Pittsburgh.
The death delayed Mike McCarthy’s season-ending news conference, which he was planning to have last Wednesday. He said the evaluation process has started — and he expects changes.
Still, McCarthy called 2014 an “excellent season,” and the team “took it up a notch” this past year. He said the players, the coaches, the support staff, the commitment, preparation, and football I-Q was the highest of his nine-year tenure with the Packers.
McCarthy praised the team for going undefeated at home, and he vowed that the N-F-C Championship loss at Seattle would not leave a hangover on the 2015 Packers. In his words, “We’re going to create another opportunity to create the best football team that we can, and go forward.”
