PHOENIX, AZ (LEARFIELD-WSAU) The Milwaukee Brewers played Oakland to a 9-9 tie yesterday in a Cactus League exhibition game at Phoenix.
Carlos Gomez hit a lead-off homer and had R-B-I’s in each of the first three innings for Milwaukee. However, the A’s erupted for four runs in the ninth off Jeremy Jeffress. Mark Canha highlighted the rally with a two-run homer with two out.
Brewers’ infield roster candidate Luis Sardinas was hit in the head with a throw while sliding into second base in the second inning. He was shaken up, but he stayed in the game and had three hits and three runs for the Crew.
Sonny Gray, the A’s projected Opening Day starter, was shelled for six runs in two-and-two-thirds innings. Brewers’ starter Jimmy Nelson went five frames, giving up four runs — one earned — as his spring E-R-A dropped to just under six-and-a-quarter.
Milwaukee is now 9-11-and-1 in Cactus League exhibitions this month. They’ll play Seattle this afternoon.
