ATLANTA, GA (WSAU) — Major League Baseball has ordered an eight game suspension for Brewers relief pitcher Will Smith for having a sticky foreign substance on his arm during the game against the Atlanta Braves Thursday.
Smith was ejected after Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez complained to the umpires about the foreign substance on his forearm above his glove hand. When umpire crew chief Jim Joyce checked, he immediately ejected Smith.
Smith said he had put a mixture of sunscreen and rosin on his forearm while warming up in the bullpen, and forgot to wipe it off upon entering the game. He is still on the Brewers roster after appealing the suspension. Major League Baseball will have to hold a hearing before Smith can be suspended.
