WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — Memorial Day may have been a day of remembering fallen soldiers for you and your family, but for the men and women of the American Legion Honor Guard it was another day of service.
American Legion Post 10 commander Bob Burton says there was more going on Memorial Day than just their ceremony at Restlawn Memorial Park. “We’re leaving here in about two minutes. I have to leave because we’re conducting a funeral this afternoon, and having a 21 gun salute and Taps and et cetera.” The Honor Guard performs around 60 of those ceremonies in the Wausau area each year.
Many veterans may feel survivor’s guilt for those who’ve passed or for not serving in the front lines, but Burton says the Legion is there to offer the Honor Guard for everyone. “It is a feeling of guilt that I personally have felt, and I think a great many men do. But that’s another impetus to honor them in the way and fashion that we do.” Burton says that as long as men and women serve in the Armed Forces, the Legion will be there for them. “Young men are still giving their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it’s an honor and privilege to be able to honor that and the sacrifice they gave.”
The Honor Guard also takes part in parades and military ceremonies, as well as welcoming home the veterans with the Honor Flight programs. They teach local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts flag etiquette and handling.
