WESTON, Wis (WSAU-WAOW) The Everest Metro police department is warning 6 gas stations to remove gambling machines from their businesses. Those video slot machines are illegal for Class A businesses like gas stations of convenience stores.
The warning letter went to two ‘The Store’ locations, two Shell stations, a BP and a Quik Mart.
Police said it is illegal for Class A establishments, like gas stations or stores, to have gambling machines. The machines — up to five of them — are allowed in Class B locations like bars and restaurants.
“I think there is a lack of understanding from the general public,” Everest Metro Police Chief Wally Starks told WAOW NewsLine Nine. “Most people probably don’t realize these machines are illegal to gamble at.”
Everest Metro PD said the illegal machines must be removed in 30 days or criminal charges will be filed. The police say the crackdown came in response to complaints from other residents.
