STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A long-time leader for the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County has earned a national award and some grant money for the Club to boot.
JR Wynne was nominated for the Maytag Dependable Leader Award by Executive Director Kevin Quevillon for his work with the club’s Gateway Report Center, helping teens who have committed crimes get back on a path to a better life. The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County is getting $20,000 from Maytag for the recognition.
JR isn’t keen on taking credit for anything. He only hopes the money will find a good use for the community.
Speaking with our sister station, WIFC, he said, “I’m not too big on being the center of attention. I think it’s all about kids and others, so what I do, it’s usually for other people. Of course, I do get to pat myself on the back, but I do that pretty much in private.”
Quevillon made sure that JR was a part of the process for deciding how the $20,000 would be spent.
Quevillon said, “We plan on using a portion of it for scholarships. We’re going to use a portion for our Plover renovation, and then we’re going to use a portion for some program equipment upgrades that JR can use for his own program.”
JR’s community service doesn’t end with the Boys & Girls Club. He also spends time working in transition homes for adults recovering from drug abuse.
Only 11 others around the country were chosen for the recognition.
