WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — Wausau school district officials say a junior at Wausau East has passed away.
Wausau East principal Bradley Peck says Genevieve Witz died of a cardiac arrest Monday morning. Witz reported to the school nurse saying she felt unwell, and it was determined that they call 911 for more assistance. She later died at the hospital.
In an email sent to parents, Peck says that they’ll be having grief counselors on hand to help students, parents and staff as the building and the district work through the loss. “We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your sons and daughters as you need.”
Pupil Services director Jeff Lindell says he’s not sure how long they’ll need the counselors. “We will continue to have a presence available over the next day for sure, possibly beyond, but we will continue to monitor the situation.” Lindell says it could take some time for students to recover from the loss, especially for those who were close to Witz. “It will take time, it will certainly take time to get to a point where it’s the new normal.”
