MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WDLB) — It appears the Kohl’s Department store chain wants to put a store in the Marshfield Mall. Paperwork submitted with the city of Marshfield shows that the architectural firm of Bowen and Associates has filed applications for a permit for work to be done regarding a 25-thousand square-foot addition to the mall property. Mayor Chris Meyer said the Common Council approved a developer’s agreement for the project after a closed session Tuesday night. “They’re going to be putting up about a 25,000 square foot addition to the mall, connecting the new space with some existing space in the mall, to provide around 40,000 square feet to a new tenant.”
The Common Council approved a developer’s agreement between the city and Malls-4-U, the group that owns the mall. That group includes the family which owns and operates Furniture and Appliance Mart. Meyer says the city approved the funding contingent upon getting a significant, national retailer as a new mall tenant.
The Mayor says the city is putting a half-million dollars toward the mall development, with the money getting paid back through future taxes on the property over the next ten years. The developer will also relocate a storm sewer at the site.
Meyer says the city doesn’t give the developer all of the money at once. “The money doesn’t come to them up front. We generally provide funding to them in phases over the construction period, with some funding given once site work is completed, and some more funding once the building is up, and then the remaining funding once the project is completed.”
The Mayor says the developer wants to have the project completed by late summer. The development agreement stipulates completion by November first.
