MINOCQUA, Wis. (WXPR) — Minocqua’s Cruiserfest has been cancelled.
The Cross County Cruisers Snowmobile Club’s board of directors has cancelled its scheduled February 12 and 13 Cruiserfest on Lake Minocqua over concerns about thin ice.
Cruiserfest has been the club’s main fundraiser for the past 16 years. It’s drawn in hundreds of sleds and thousands of spectators to its radar and bikini runs, vendor row and fireworks show on the ice. President Tom Bird says there’s nearly no ice covering the lake and there needs to be 16 to 18 inches of ice to hold the event. “So we basically looked at long term forecasts, looked at history years of El Nino in the past and everything pointed at bad ice. So for the safety of our volunteers, patrons, and participants we made the decision to just go ahead and call it now.”
Bird says the cancellation means a loss of $15,000 that would have gone toward trail maintenance and development.
