WESTON, Wis. (WSAU) — People from across the Midwest will be at DC Everest Junior High tonight and tomorrow for the annual Evercon Gaming Convention.
It’s the 16th year of the convention and Gaming Club Advisor Christian Ammon says it remains a student run and student organized event. “All of the heavy lifting of the con is done by students, from selling items in the cafe, selling at the Gamer’s Store, running admissions. They have a lot of work.”
Ammon says the convention has something for everyone this year. “Role-playing games and board games card games and video games. Listen to presentations and go watch the cosplay contest.” There are a number of video game tournaments as well as a newly added cribbage and sheepshead tournament. The Society for Creative Anachronism will be on hand to do medieval exhibitions and the Wausau Paranormal Society will be giving a lecture on the haunted places of the Wausau area.
There’s a number of featured guests including comic book artist and Ringle native Tim Seeley and Drew Happli from Steve Jackson Games. Ammon says they’re also very lucky to have a legend of the early work behind modern role playing games in attendance this year. “Frank Mentzer is an American fantasy author and game designer, best known for his work on the original D&D. We’re really happy to see him, he’s really the last of the gurus of the originals who created Dungeons and Dragons.” He says Mentzer will be running some special D&D campaigns as well as doing a meet and greet with fans on Saturday.
Proceeds from the convention itself are donated to groups across Central Wisconsin each year as decided by the students, and Ammon says this year’s charity auction is going to support the Neighbor’s Place. “We’ve been working with Tom Rau and others from their organization. One hundred percent of the charity auction proceeds will go to benefit the Neighbor’s Place and the wonderful things they do for the community and Central Wisconsin.”
The convention runs Friday night from 6 to 10 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 11 pm. Tickets are 15 dollars at the door. Ammon says they’re expecting over 1200 people to attend this year’s convention.
