STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Gov. Scott Walker vowed to cut tuition for undergraduate students in the UW system in his state of the state address earlier this week.
UW-Stevens Point Vice Chancellor Greg Summers tells Newsline 9 that some faculty members are a bit uneasy about where the cuts may be coming from if not funded by the state.
“Our administration, our faculty, are going to be a little bit nervous until we learn some more details,” Summers said. “We’re especially concerned about whether that deduction in tuition will be funded or not.”
Summers told Newsline 9 that if the state doesn’t cover the tuition cuts it could lead to reductions around the university.
He said, “It would cause, I think, some more reductions in programming, reductions in opportunities for students, reduction in the education we’re able to provide to Central Wisconsin.”
Gov. Walker addressed the concerns of where the funding of the tuition cuts will be coming from in La Crosse on Wednesday.
“We’ll be paying for it, so it will not come out of the base of the UW system budget,” said Walker. “We will put additional money into cover the cost of the tuition cut, as well we’ll be putting additional money into the UW system overall.”
More details about the tuition cuts will be revealed when the Governor presents the state budget next month.
