MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — The Wenzel Family Plaza, the new ‘city square’ in downtown Marshfield, is set to open by next July, and Convention and Visitors Bureau director Matt McLean says now a tentative plan has been put in place to fund the maintenance and event ‘programming’ of the new facility.
According to McLean, the CVB along with the city’s Economic Development Board, Park and Rec. Department and others will chip in $50,000 each for the operation of the park during its first year. “We are partnering with the Main Street Marshfield organization, the Economic Development Board, and a few others, to have programming and other activities happen in that plaza.”
A special search committee is also being formed to help select a new coordinator for the facility to oversee the scheduling of entertainment and other events in the new plaza. “Right now we’re assembling a 5 to 7 person committee, and we’re looking for an event planner or someone that can really help drive a lot of foot traffic to that plaza, and to downtown.”
McLean says the bottom line goal is to help revitalize and grow Marshfield’s downtown. “I think it will really help new businesses wanting to move downtown. The downtown is the heart of Marshfield, and the stronger and more things going on down there, the better it is for everybody.”
Construction on Wenzel Family Plaza began last fall, and a grand opening for the new facility is tentatively planned for the second week of July to correspond with Farm Technology Days, an annual statewide agriculture show which is being held in the Marshfield area July 10-12th.
