MINOCQUA, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Just because it’s the fishing opener doesn’t mean that you’ll actually be able to fish on some Wisconsin lakes.
Sub-zero temperatures through the winter left plenty of ice on some lakes, and some of that ice still hasn’t broken. Kurt Justice with Kurt’s Island Sports Shop located on Lake Minocqua tells News 9 that he’s been getting calls all week from some of his regular fishermen asking if it’s worth it to make the trip.
“The last time we saw this was in 2013. My business, my customer county went down 75 percent.” He adds that he does not expect the ice to last much longer, calling this just a bump in the road.
Governor Scott Walker also acknowledged the situation during a series of stops on Friday touting the state’s tourism industry, saying he still anticipates a good summer.
