UNDATED (WSAU) — Last week, Wisconsin Manufacturer and Commerce President and CEO Kurt Bauer said he believed it’s time for the state to change their license plate slogan from “America’s Dairlyland”. State Representative Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) disagrees.
Rep. Shankland says she’s found Bauer’s comments to be offensive.
“That’s why I think if we’re going to have a conversation about the license plate, fine, but please don’t degrade out reputation as an agricultural state. I think that’s part of what makes us proud is that we feed America,” said Shankland.
Rep. Shankland says she reached out to her constituents to see how they felt about the change.
“The vast, vast, vast majority said keep it don’t touch the license plate,” she said. “A couple people suggested something other than “Forward” and that was it. Nobody said ‘oh yeah we should definitely take America’s Dairyland off because we don’t like it either’.”
Bauer suggested that instead of “America’s Dairyland” the license plates should say “Forward” to show that Wisconsin is more than just an agricultural state.
