STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – In only 15 days, Portage County went from having 200 COVID-19 cases to over 300.
On July 7, the Portage County Health and Human Services-Division of Public Health confirmed the 200th case of COVID-19. On July 22, the county surpassed 300 cases.
According to the health department, as of 2 pm on Thursday, 51 cases (16 percent) are currently active and 251 cases (84 percent) have recovered. Portage County reports no deaths due to the virus. The largest number of confirmed positive cases are those between the ages of 20-29 (30.3 percent of cases).
In a press release from Portage County Health and Human Services-Division of Public Health, they say the discussion around effectiveness, safety and ethics of a county-wide mask mandate continues. Hand washing, social distancing, avoiding large gatherings and non-essential travel, wearing a face covering, and staying home when sick are recommended precautions.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 1,052 new COVID-19 cases around the state on Thursday. The number of fatalities increased by 13 to 878 statewide.
