WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of starting a fire that destroyed a west-side laundromat and flower shop has taken a plea deal.
Azeez Aleem Hakeem was in Marathon County court Monday afternoon for a plea hearing. In June Hakeem withdrew his original plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to have a plea reset on Monday. At the hearing, Hakeem pleaded guilty to three counts including Arson of a Building without Owners Consent, Burglary of a Building or Dwelling, and Carrying a Concealed Knife. All three counts had a repeat modifier attached to them.
Hakeem was accused of setting the Rainbow Coin Laundry on fire after he was told to remove his belongings from the building. At the time he had been staying at the laundromat while helping the owner maintain the facility and keep homeless people from sleeping in the building.
A sentencing hearing for Hakeem was set for October 30th. A PSI will also be completed within the next 60 days.
