WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A local Facebook group is holding a protest downtown in regards to school reopening.
The Facebook group “Parents for Wausau Schools Reopening” is holding a protest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 400 Block in downtown Wausau Saturday. Facebook group organizer April Van Rixel spoke with WSAU Morning Show host Ben Armstrong about the protest Thursday morning.
Van Rixel says the protest is for parents to express their disappointment in the school board’s decision. “We’re upset that the schools are not reopening. The virtual option does not work for a lot of families and for students. What we hope to happen is for our schools to reopen.”
In reopening schools, Van Rixel thinks the Wausau School District can look towards others in the areas for how reopening schools will look like. “The schools being open, we can look at other districts in the area and what they’ve implemented into their classrooms with their instruction. The COVID-19 factor into opening the schools, no I do not believe that that should be a factor in opening our schools.”
Van Rixel says she hopes the protest will draw attention to the need for in-person classes and those who support returning to school buildings in the fall. The protest is planned to happen from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. rain or shine.
Along with the protest planned for Saturday, the group has gotten attention from comments made by one of their members, Marathon County Clerk Kim Trueblood. Trueblood commented on a group post that in her position as County Clerk she handles school board elections in the spring and can, “get info & do anything behind the scenes”. Monday afternoon the Marathon County Executive Board Committee authorized an outside ethics investigation into Trueblood’s comments.
