WESTON, WI (WSAU) — Village leaders in Weston have outlined the process that will be used to select a new trustee from a list of six candidates.
During a special meeting on Monday, trustees determined that all candidates would be asked a set list of questions, then one would be voted on to the board immediately to fill out the remainder of President Mark Maloney’s term.
Trustees also agreed that each candidate would be interviewed separately and in alphabetical order. The board also agreed that the process should not begin until all candidates were present to make sure no one gets the chance to hear what their fellow candidates are saying before it’s their turn to interview.
“It’s better for them not to hear each other’s answers. However, the public still needs to hear them,” noted Trustee Loren White.
Given the widespread availability of public meetings these days, Maloney said that would require an airtight process to sequester the candidates until it’s their turn to address the board.
“They all have to be here at the same time. They can’t be late, because then they could hear answers from others. [through Zoom],” said Maloney.
The vacant seat was created when former Village President Wally Sparks resigned his position to move to South Carolina with his wife. That led to Maloney being elevated to President.
Interviews will be conducted at the start of the next regular board meeting on August 17th. The selected candidate will then be seated immediately by the Village Clerk and will participate in the remainder of the meeting.
