One of the few uplifting things that has happened in this year of crap…happened yesterday.
I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked
— a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate.-Joe Biden
“The best executives know that you’re only as good as the team you build. It’s a lesson that clearly escaped our current president. But @JoeBiden just showed he gets it: @KamalaHarris is a smart choice who will be a strong partner in the White House.”-Mike Bloomberg
“Wish John Lewis could see this.”-Neal Katyal
“Important point being made by @JoyAnnReid right now on @msnbc: That it’s a massive strength, not a weakness, that @JoeBiden picked someone who challenged him and went after him in the debates. Quite a contrast with @realDonaldTrump”-Neal Katyal
“Joe Biden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals. I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”-Kamala Harris
“Here’s what I’ve learned about my friend Kamala over the past 4 years: She’s got great instincts, and she trusts them. When she makes a promise, she keeps it. Friendship and family matter to her more than almost anything. If you’re in a fight, you want her in your foxhole.”Chris Murphy
“Finally a Presidential ticket that looks like America!! Now we all go to work to restore the soul of our Nation. VOTE!!!!”-Rob Reiner
This from Elizabeth Warren…
“You’ll see lots of attacks on Harris’s prosecutorial record in the coming days, from left & right. Some sincere, some cynical. Some justifiable, some not so much. But never forget: her opponent tear-gassed protesters and declared: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”-Medhi Hasan

A couple of 1960’s musical obits for you today. Trini Lopez died of complications from COVID-19 at the age of 84 and Wayne Fontana passed away after a long illness at the age of 74.
In 1960s America while the teenage population was swooning over the Beatles and other pop bands of the day…adults were embracing music from many different ethnic artists. The TV variety shows that were all over the screen in those days would feature folks like Harry Belafonte, Don Ho and other singers from all over the globe. One was Trini Lopez. Although born in Dallas he had a Mexican heritage and refused to let the music company folks change his name. He was a good guitar player and formed a band at 15 which caught the ear of Buddy Holly’s father who recommended him to Holly’s producer Norman Petty. Petty got him a record contract with Columbia in the late 50’s. He struggled to break through for a few years before Frank Sinatra heard him sing and signed him to his new label, Reprise. The first LP was a live one recorded at PJs nightclub. It included his version of “If I Had A Hammer” which went to #1 in 36 countries while reaching #3 on the charts in America. He had a string of hit albums and singles throughout the 1960’s. You may also remember him as an actor. He appeared as one of “The Dirty Dozen”. He also designed a couple of guitar models for Gibson in the mid 60’s that are now highly sought after by collectors.
Wayne Fontana, who fronted British Invasion group The Mindbenders has died at 74 after a long illness. The band had a number of UK hits including the Curtis Mayfield song “Um Um Um Um” and also took Game of Love to #1 in America in the spring of 1965. He left the band before they scored another American smash with “A Groovy Kind Of Love”.
Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight is back on the charts thanks to a viral video. The song was a Top-20 hit for Collins back in 1981, and now, some twin brothers from Gary, Indiana have made it perhaps the most “memed” song of August 2020. The highlight of the viral video is when 22-year-old Tim and Fred Williams giving their spontaneous reaction to the song’s unexpected drum break. In the Air Tonight is now Number-3 on the iTunes song sales chart.
Lindsey Buckingham is singing for the first time since his heart surgery. The former Fleetwood Mac singer had open heart surgery in 2019 that damaged his vocal cords, sidelining his solo career. He announced a solo tour earlier this year but had to cancel it due to the pandemic. On Friday, Buckingham finally re-emerged with a four-song acoustic set on Zoom, including the Fleetwood Mac classic “Never Going Back Again.” The video has since been removed.
Neil Young is removing Facebook and Google logins from his website. Young wrote a statement on his Archives website stating that Facebook “knowingly allows untruths and lies in its political ads to circulate on the platform, while bots sow discord among users.” Young referred to Facebook as a “corrupt social platform,” and said, “Sowing dissent and chaos in our country via political disinformation is something we cannot condone.”
The latest season of “Fargo” starring Chris Rock debuts Sept 27th.
Giannis ejected for a headbutt last night. Suspension coming?
Covers Of The Day (found these slices of early 70’s coolness from the all-female band Fanny. The band was fronted by the Millington sisters. They resisted record company efforts to emphasize their femininity and just wanted to be known for their playing skills in a male dominant industry. And they did. Lowell George liked them and jammed with the group. David Bowie had this to say…”They were extraordinary…they played like m**herf**kers . they wer colossal and wonderful and nobody ever mentions them.”)
Fanny covers Marvin Gaye
Fanny covers Buffalo Springfield
Other Quotes of the Day
“People taking this survey seem to misunderstand the criteria. Tom Cotton is our nation’s most dangerous potential future fascist president. But Ron Johnson is far and away the most dangerous and most anti-American current Senator. And Ted Cruz is just the worst person.”-Walter Schaub
“We have Ron Johnson saying he is glad that the talks to help Americans have broken down. We have John Cornyn tweeting out corona beer bottles. We have Ted Cruz mocking suggestions on how to help Americans who are suffering. That’s the Trump GOP. Haven’t you #HadEnough?”-Mighty E
Ron Johnson—How it began. Johnson spoke at a Tea Party event. He was upset Obama was trying to pass the Affordable Care Act. He said “Health insurers shouldn’t have to cover preexisting conditions, & America shouldn’t insure the poor.” Kochs asked him to run 2010 US Senate race.
.@gtconway3d lays out all the lies you’ve got to swallow to stick with Trump. My fave: Trump wouldn’t use presidential power to advance personal interests, but if he did “whatever is in his personal interests is necessarily in the nation’s interests.”

“American exceptionalism” shouldn’t come to mean “we’re the only advanced democracy that can’t contain the coronavirus.”-Hillary Clinton

“Just as Obama unf**ked the Bush/ Cheney nightmare… so too will Biden clean up this Category 5 Trump disaster. The world is cheering for us. They can’t wait for us to give this clown a beatdown on Election Day.”-Billy Baldwin
