STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Officials with Ascension St. Michael’s Hospital and the Stevens Point Police Department have determined that there was no bite behind a bomb threat that was called into the facility Tuesday afternoon.
“At about 1 PM [Tuesday] we received a threat by phone to the facility,” said Spokesman Tom Weaver. “We immediately enacted our emergency response procedures, cooperated with local authorities, and performed a thorough search of the facility then determined that the threat was unfounded.”
Weaver says they did not evacuate the facility but some normal procedures were interrupted as part of the emergency protocol put in place by employees. There were a couple of surgeries that were going on at the time that were allowed to continue. “We plan for things like this, and enacted that plan with our staff who with the local police did a great job of evaluating the situation and then allowing us to get back to normal operations.”
“Definitely an all hands on deck measure to sweep the facility to make sure everything was secure,” he added.
Weaver would not comment on the nature of the call, as the investigation is ongoing. He only confirmed that the threat was received by phone, and there was never any danger to the public. Police did ask residents to avoid the Ascension St Michael’s emergency room for a time while they were investigating.
