GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — With no preseason tune-ups this year, the Green Bay Packers are taking a “loose lips sink ships” approach to guarding their depth chart and other information from training camp.
GM Brian Gutenkunst issued a new media policy this week which prohibits anyone covering training camp from revealing which players are taking reps with the first, second, or third teams. The policy covers everything from written and broadcast reports to Tweets.
This means fans will have to wait until the team issues an official depth chart ahead of their week one game against Minnesota to see who will be starting and which players will have key rotational roles.
Packers Training Camp, like all other NFL Training Camps, is normally open to the public and credentialed media. Fans and insiders normally pay close attention to key position battles and watch rookies who are competing for starting and backup roles. But because camps are closed to the public and media access is limited due to COVID-19, the NFL is allowing teams to tighten up rules regarding the release of such information.
Some clubs including the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and Detroit Lions have allowed reporters, both those employed by the team and from outside sources, to freely describe position battles and other depth chart information.
