KENOSHA, WI (WSAU) — More details, including the name of the officer who fired shots, have been given by the Wisconsin Department of Justice regarding the shooting of Jacob Blake.
Details of the incident that occurred Sunday night in Kenosha have been released by the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The DOJ news release identifies Officer Rusten Sheskey as the officer who fired his weapon 7-times at Jacob Blakes shirt. Sheskey is a 7-year veteran of the force and is currently on administrative leave.
The release says that officers arrived on the scene after a call from a woman reporting her boyfriend was on the premises and was not supposed to be there. Officers attempted to arrest Blake and deployed a taser. The taser did not bring Blake to the ground and he walked around his car to reach into the car.
Officer Sheskey followed Blake to the other side of the car with his weapon drawn. While holding Blake’s shirt as he reached into the car Sheskey fired his weapon 7-times into Blake’s back. No members of the Kenosha Police Department have body cameras so there is no body camera footage of the incident.
During the initial investigation after the incident, Blake admitted he had a knife in the car. A knife was found on the driver’s side floorboard of the vehicle and no additional weapons were located. Blake was transported from the scene by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Blake remains in the hospital at this time.
The DOJ along with the FBI and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate the incident. More information is expected to be released within 30 days as the DOJ aims to provide a report to a state prosecutor. That report will be reviewed by the prosecutor who then decides if any charges will be brought forth.
