MINOCQUA, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — Tourism officials in the Northwoods have closed the books on the summer travel season, and initial indications are this year’s numbers may not be as bad as first feared.
Minocqua Chamber Director Krystal Westfahl tells WXPR Radio in Rhinelander the loss of events like Beef-o-Rama was a blow to the community but some businesses were able to recoup revenue.
She says they were able to make that happen by encouraging guests to make their getaways into a safe, socially distant experience. “What that meant was we want you to be here. We want you to come. We want you to experience it and have a sense of peace and hopefully a sense of normalcy. But we need to do it responsibly and we wanted them to follow the WEDC guidelines, travel guidelines that were being put out by the state through travel Wisconsin.”
The Chamber also changed their tagline from Let’s Minocqua Later to Let’s Minocqua Safely to encourage visitors to come in small groups and experience things like outdoor activities.
Westfahl adds that it seems the fall tourism season should be just as strong as year’s past. “From all accounts, it does seem like our fall tourism is going to be nearly as strong as it has in the past, but the jury is still out on what their spending habits are going to be once they’re here. And I think that was kind of the big question, what we were going to see when it came time for them to go shopping and dining and all of that stuff.”
