KRONENWETTER, WI (WSAU) — As the election day draws near, many residents are reporting that their political yard signs are disappearing or worse, say they’ve been threatened because they are displaying one candidate’s sign or another.
Kronenwetter Police Chief Terry McHugh says it’s sad but true that this is what it’s come to. “Like many other communities, probably around the country, we are no exception. People are wanting to steal yard signs.”
McHugh says he doesn’t have exact numbers but his staff has noticed an increase in calls as election day has drawn closer. He says there are steps that residents can take to protect their signs and their free speech.
“It’s always a good idea to have a couple of extra, but we also [encourage] you to bring them in at night. It’s kind of sad that it’s where we are at, that we have to suggest that, but it’s where we are. We also like cameras, those are great tools for us, along with extra lighting.”
McHugh says cameras like a video doorbell will work for those that may not have the resources for an extensive security system. Additional lighting would also provide more visibility for your signs during the evening hours, something he says could be desirable for those putting them out.
Those who tamper with political yard signs could be subject to charges of criminal damage to property, trespassing, or both. Depending on the circumstances that could mean either a municipal fine or a date in circuit court.
There have been reports of some residents receiving threatening letters in the mail saying they aren’t welcome because of their Biden yard sign. McHugh says his department hasn’t received any complaints about the matter.
