MERRILL, WI (WSAU) Prairie River Middle School in Merrill is switching from in-person to virtual learning starting on Tuesday. It’s because of rising numbers of COVID-19 cases and mandatory quarantines among students and staff.
There are now four schools in the Merrill School District that have temporarily suspended in-person instruction. The others are Goodrich, Jefferson and Washington elementary schools. Merrill High School and the Maple Grove Charter School remain open.
It is unclear how long the schools will be offering virtual learning only.
The school district said they did have plans to shift to virtual instruction if there was a spike in COVID cases, but they did not expect multiple schools would need to shift at the same time.
Lincoln County now has 1,284 COVID cases, 172 of which are considered active. There have been 16 fatalities.
