Paul Hornung became a Green Bay Packer the year I was born. He became a Packer legend in the years when there was nothing more important on an autumn Sunday afternoon than to sit and watch the Packers stomp whichever hapless opponent was next in line. Despite fining him numerous times for his off the field “activities”, Vince Lombardi called him the best player he ever coached. One of my favorite Hornung story involves John F. Kennedy and how the president helped the Packers win a championship. In 1961, after losing the NFL Championship game the year before, went 11-3 in dominating fashion. They were going to fave the New York Giants for the NFL Championship. But , the Cold war was raging…Berlin was a hot-spot and a number of Packer players, including Hornung, were among the thousands of military reservists and national guardsman that were called up for duty and various times during the season. Lombardi, who had become friends with Kennedy during the 1960 campaign, had the president’s private phone number. Hornung, the NFL’s MVP in 1961 was at Fort Riley Kansas as the Packers prepared to play the Giants. As the story goes, Lombardi got on the phone to President Kennedy and asked if Hornung could get weekend pass to play in the title game. Kennedy agreed reportedly saying “Hornung isnt going to win the war on Sunday, but the football fans of the country deserve the two best teams on the field that day”. The Packers beat the Giants 37-0 with Hornung scoring 19 points (a TD, extra point and 4 field goals) . It was the first time a title game had been played in Green Bay and the first of four championships during the Lombardi Years. Next time you hear someone call Green Bay Titletown…this was the year that moniker was born.
Hornung is the latest of the Glory Years Packers to pass on in the last couple of years. Willie Wood, Herb Adderly, Willie Davis, Zeke Bratkowski, and of course, Bart Starr have all left us. For those of us of a certain age…these guys were larger than life…and no one seemed larger than the Golden Boy.
This from Ryan Wood….
Davante Adams just passed Don Hutson for fifth on #Packers‘ all-time receptions list. Adams now has 489 receptions in his career. Only Packers receivers with more: Driver, Sharpe, Nelson, Lofton.
I’ve usually said that a player shouldnt lose their starting job because of injury…but I’m making an exception for Graham Mertz. He simply is more dynamic than Jack Coan and gives the Badgers more options on offense. It’s a tough break for Coan, but Mertz has got to be the guy going forward. I’m really looking forward to this week’s game. Hopefully they can stay out of COVID trouble.
Badgers coming in at No. 10. Northwestern is No. 19, making this the first top-20 matchup between the two teams since 1962! For the record… Wisconsin was ranked No. 8 in the 1962 matchup where they beat No. 1 Northwestern 37-8
A new Meryl Streep film, directed by Steven Soderburgh, coming to HBO Max in December.

Due to @CountryMusic’s failure to mention John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver at the CMA’s last night, @amandashires and I have decided to return our membership cards. I doubt anybody will care, but we cared a lot about our heroes.
Covers Of The Day (it was 50 years ago today that Stephen Stills released his first solo record. It was a great record and included his iconic song “Love The One Youre With” which has been covered by a whole bunch of people including these….)
It also included Stills playing with Hendrix and Clapton. (I have heard this is the only record they both appeared on) I think I have included these before but they are always worth another listen

I genuinely hope Parler is just one giant FBI trap or we’re f**ked. Oh, and if you’re moving from Facebook to Parlar, these are the folks you’re hanging out with. They seem nice….

“Note: @senatemajldr and Senate Republicans’ threat to reject Biden cabinet nominees for ideological reasons would be an insane new busting of a norm. The Senate has rejected only 3 nominees in the last 150 years, the most recent (for being an alcoholic sexual harasser) in 1989.”-Kurt Andersen

“This really is worth sharing with anyone you know in the state of Georgia. This person represents nobody & nothing other than her own bank account. She embodies the GOP code: say shit I don’t even believe to whip up MAGA vote, cash in & laugh at the ‘base’ behind their backs.”-Edward Norton
“He will live out his remaining days tormented by his failure, trying to stave off prison and financial ruin and fomenting on Newsmax and OAN. Every year that goes by he will be a more disgraced figure. A cold, fraught and miserable post Presidency. Happy Saturday thought!”-David Plouffe
