After Wisconsin’s nine day gun season, Washington County has detected it’s first case of Chronic Wasting Disease in an adult buck. The deer was shot in Polk, which is within ten miles of Ozaukee County.
By state law, Wisconsin DNR is required to enforce a two-year baiting and feeding ban in Ozaukee County that starts on January 5th. Also, the department will have to renew a three-year ban for Washington County.
Wisconsin started to watch for CWD in 1999. The nervous system disease is fatal for deer, elk, moose, and caribou. To date, there haven’t been any cases of CWD being transferred to humans.
