Christian Harrison, a 26-year-old Louisiana native, advanced to his first career ATP Tour semifinal with a victory Monday at the Delray Beach (Fla.) Open.
Harrison, ranked 789th in the world, got past Italy’s Gianluca Mager 7-6 (2), 6-4 to earn a semifinal date against fourth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland. Hurkacz topped Ecuador’s Roberto Quiroz 6-4, 6-4.
Before this week, Harrison hadn’t reached the main draw of an ATP Tour event since 2018, when he appeared in two tournaments. He lost in the first round at Wimbledon that year, then won a match before falling in the second round at Newport, R.I. He has since had eight surgeries, according to Tennis.com.
In the other half of the Delray Beach bracket, Sebastian Korda won an all-American quarterfinal, upsetting second-seeded John Isner 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Korda will face off Tuesday with the winner of the late Monday quarterfinal between eighth-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States and Cameron Norrie of Great Britain.
Antalya Open
Eighth-seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan came from behind to claim the first set, then closed out top-seeded Matteo Berrettini of Italy 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the quarterfinals at Antalya, Turkey.
Berrettini failed to hold serve at 5-4 of the opening set, allowing Bublik to pull even. In the tiebreaker, Bublik won four consecutive points for a 6-4 lead, but he needed three set points to prevail. Bublik earned the only service break of the second set to grab a 3-2 lead. He staved off two break points in the next game and eventually sealed the match.
Bublik’s semifinal opponent will be France’s Jeremy Chardy, who eked out a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8) win over fifth-seeded Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany. The other semifinal features second-seeded David Goffin of Belgium, a 6-3, 6-2 victor over Italy’s Stefano Travaglia on Monday, and fourth-seeded Alex de Minaur of Australia, a 6-2, 6-4 winner against sixth-seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia.
