MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — The Wisconsin National Guard has had its hands full.
Between dealing with COVID-19 testing, civil unrest, and two elections, it’s been a busy year for the Guard.
“I think it’s the busiest year we’ve ever had, at least in a domestic capacity,” said Guard Major Joe Trovato. “We’ve had very heavy years in the past of overseas deployments, but never before have we ever had such a sustained domestic support mission.”
The guard has conducted over a million COVID-19 tests, dealt with civil unrest in Milwaukee, Kenosha, Madison, and Green Bay, and deployed thousands to assist with the April primary and November general election.
If you thought 2021 would be a quieter year, so far it hasn’t been. The guard is deploying to Madison next week to help Capitol police.
“We’ll be serving a support role to them to help with safety and security at the capitol building,” said Trovato.
There is concern, stemming from the FBI, that protests over the inauguration of Joe Biden on January 20th could turn violent.
