I was an avid reader of the musical press back in the 70’s. Not only Rolling Stone but Melody Maker and New Musical Express when I could get my hands on them. Plus as music director at 90FM in the late 70’s I had access to Radio & Records and Billboard too. So we had heard of the Sex Pistols long before I heard their records. When “Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols” came across my desk I really didn’t know what to do with it. The band was everything that “punk rock” was supposed to be and yet they almost seemed like a caricature of the culture. Marketing guru Malcolm McClaren led them thru the media mine fields (although not cleanly) and the band’s filthy disdain for everything “establishment” was probably genuine but still came off as contrived at times. Despite being banned by the BBC, the song “God Save The Queen” went to #1 displacing Hotel California (the complete antithisis of the Pistols) although the mainstream music press wouldnt recognize that fact and left the space blank that week. I bring it up because a new documentary of the band is coming…have a look.
The two most memorable songs were, of course “God Save The Queen” and “Anarchy In The UK”. I actually found them to be agreeable slices of protest to what was going on in England and the world at the time.
A couple of other upcoming films caught my eye…”The US vs Billie Holiday”. Andra Day looks incredible in the role and if it brings the song “Strange Fruit” back into public awareness for today’s society…that’s a good thing
And actress Regina King (one of my faves) in her directorial debut, looks at a summit meeting of heavyweights in “One Night In Miami” on Amazon Prime.
This is kinda cool for you geography geeks out there
