Sidney Crosby swept in a rebound 1:11 into overtime Tuesday for his third point as the Pittsburgh Penguins overcame a pair of two-goal deficits to top the visiting Washington Capitals 5-4.
Crosby notched the 17th OT tally of his career, tying Ilya Kovalchuk for third in NHL history. He trails only Alex Ovechkin (23) and Jaromir Jagr (19).
Jake Guentzel and Teddy Blueger each had a goal and an assist while Colton Sceviour and Evgeni Malkin also scored for the Penguins. Kris Letang and Crosby each had two assists. Pittsburgh goaltender Casey DeSmith made 22 saves and picked up his first career assist.
Tom Wilson scored twice, Lars Eller and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored, and Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves for Washington.
Flyers 3, Sabres 0
Kevin Hayes had one goal and one assist, Travis Konecny and Jakub Voracek each scored once and host Philadelphia defeated Buffalo.
Flyers backup goaltender Brian Elliott stopped all 40 shots in his first start of the season. Elliott, who holds a career mark of 14-2-2 against the Sabres, has 41 career shutouts.
Philadelphia lost a pair of players — Phil Myers and Morgan Frost — to undisclosed injuries during the game. Sabers goaltender Carter Hutton also left with an apparent upper-body injury after two periods with Jonas Johansson starting the third. Johansson made eight saves and Hutton had 19.
Devils 4, Rangers 3
Jack Hughes scored twice and added an assist as visiting New Jersey held on for a victory over New York.
Hughes continued his quick start by being involved in each of New Jersey’s three goals in the second period. The 2019 No. 1 overall draft pick recorded his first career two-goal game and second career three-point game. Travis Zajac scored 32 seconds in and Miles Wood scored for the third straight game as the Devils won their second straight.
Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad scored power-play goals in the second period for the Rangers. Filip Chytil scored New York’s other goal in the third period.
Panthers 5, Blackhawks 4 (OT)
Frank Vatrano scored 2:50 into overtime as Florida beat Chicago in Sunrise, Fla.
Aleksander Barkov slipped a sharp pass to the right circle to Vatrano, who one-timed his first goal of the season for the game winner. The Panthers earned their second win in successive matchups with the Blackhawks to begin their season.
Newcomer Carter Verhaeghe scored twice as did Patric Hornqvist. On Florida’s “unfit to play” list since camp opened Jan. 3, No. 1 goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made his first appearance and turned aside 30 of 34 shots. Dominik Kubalik netted his first two goals for Chicago, which lost their fourth straight to start the season.
Red Wings 3, Blue Jackets 2 (OT)
Tyler Bertuzzi scored his first goal of the season 15 seconds into overtime and host Detroit avenged a one-goal loss to Columbus the previous day.
Dylan Larkin carried the puck into the Blue Jackets’ zone and blasted a shot from the right circle. Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins made the save but the rebound bounced off Bertuzzi’s thigh and into the net.
Bobby Ryan scored his fourth goal in three games for the Red Wings. Anthony Mantha had the other Detroit goal while Jonathan Bernier made 22 saves. Boone Jenner and Alexandre Texier scored for the Blue Jackets while Merzlikins made 24 saves.
Jets 4, Senators 3 (OT)
Nikolaj Ehlers scored the overtime winner as visiting Winnipeg erased a two-goal deficit to beat Ottawa. Seconds after Jets goalie Laurent Brossoit made a clutch save, Ehlers converted on a two-on-one rush with Andrew Copp at the 2:20 mark.
Brossoit made 38 saves for the Jets, who have won two of three games to start the season, both in overtime. Oddly enough, Winnipeg has yet to hold a lead during regulation time.
Blake Wheeler had a goal and an assist for the Jets, and Adam Lowry and Kyle Connor added goals. Josh Norris, Chris Tierney and Alex Galchenyuk were the goal-scorers for the Senators, who got a 24-save effort from Matt Murray.
Avalanche 3, Kings 2
Brandon Saad scored three minutes into the game and Colorado held on for a victory at Los Angeles.
Devon Toews and Mikko Rantanen added power-play goals two minutes apart in the second period, giving the Avalanche six second-period goals in their last two games. Philipp Grubauer made 23 saves as Colorado earned its second consecutive victory.
Andreas Athanasiou prevented the shutout, scoring for Los Angeles with 12:10 remaining. He has a goal in each of the Kings’ three games, all defeats. Adrian Kempe added his first of the season for Los Angeles with 5:38 to play on a power play.
