MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A three-goal third-period outburst lifted the Wisconsin men’s hockey team to a 4-1 win over Michigan State, completing a weekend sweep of the Spartans in Madison.
Cole Caufield was involved in every Badger goal. The Stevens Point native set up Linus Weissbach early in the first to put the Badgers up 1-0 after one. Michigan State scored in the second making the score 1-1 after two.
Then Wisconsin poured it on in the final ten minutes. Ty Pelton-Byce started the rally with a power play goal that was set up by Caufield and Weissbach. Two and a half minutes later Caufield would cash in another power play opportunity. He added one more for good measure by scoring an empty-net goal to close out the game.
Cameron Rowe had a light day in net facing just 18 shots, stopping 17 of them.
With the four-point weekend Wisconsin maintains their position in second place in the Big Ten standings with 28 points (9-5-0, with one of those losses coming in Overtime). Minnesota continues to lead the pack with 33 points, Michigan State sits in the bottom of the league standings.
The Badgers will begin a four-game conference road trip next weekend against the league leaders. Game one on Friday begins at 7 PM, coverage begins at 6:30 on WSAU.
