WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The WIAA held the 2021 State Hockey Championships at the South Wood County Ice Arena in Wisconsin Rapids this weekend.
In Division 1 Boy’s action, Hudson ousted Verona 4-0 to claim their 5th state title in their 12th appearance in the finals. Division 2 saw St. Mary’s Springs win their second straight crown with a 4-1 victory over Superior.
It was the Ledgers’ second appearance in the big dance as a stand-alone program. Superior was making their 38th trip to state, the most in WIAA history.
In the Girls State Championship, it was the Chippewa Falls co-op topping the University School co-op 3-2 in overtime. Both programs were making their first appearance in the state finals under their current co-op configurations.
Meanwhile, a pair of local schools punched their tickets to the Division 5 GBB state tourneys on Saturday including Rapids Assumption who beat Wauzeka-Steuben 65-44. Three Lakes also clinched a spot in the state tourney with a 73-30 win over Athens.
Both schools will play semifinal games Thursday morning in La Crosse. Three Lakes draws Black Hawk at 9 AM, Assumption will duel McDonell Catholic at 12:30.
The winners will then meet for the state title at 7 PM.
This year’s state tournament is being split between La Crosse and Menominee Nation Arena in Oshkosh. A limited number of tickets are being made available to each participating state tournament team. Any remaining tickets will be sold to the general public in the days leading up to the games.
Fans interested in purchasing some of their school’s allotted tickets can contact their school’s main office.
The WIAA has been shuffling state tournament sites this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. That includes all state tournaments that were to be held in venues managed by the University of Wisconsin system schools, which have not allowed outside events.
