MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Two sophomore forwards are nominated for the most prestigious trophy in college hockey.
It was announced on Wednesday morning that Badger forwards Cole Caufield and Dylan Holloway are among the 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. The Hobey Baker Award is given each year to the top NCAA men’s hockey player of the season.
Caufield and Holloway are the first Badgers to be nominated for the award since Joel Rumpel in 2014. Caulfield is a leading candidate for the award as he leads the nation in goals scored and points with 28 goals and 49 points in 30 games. He was also recently recognized unanimously as the Big Ten Player of the Year.
Holloway is tied for fourth in the nation with 34 points on 11 goals and 23 assists in 22 games. He also dominated headlines in February with 17 points in eight games, matching his point total in 35 games played during his freshman season. Holloway also earned Hockey Commissioners’ Association National Player of the Month in February.
Caufield and Holloway, are the 13th and 14th Badgers players named Hobey finalists and the first forwards since Blake Geoffrion in 2010. Geoffrion is currently the program’s only Hobey Baker Award winner.
Other Badger’s Hobey Baker Award finalists since its establishment in 1981 include Joel Rumpel, Justin Schultz (x2), Blake Geoffrion, Brendan Smith, Jamie McBain, Brian Elliott, Dany Heatley, Steve Reinprecht (Runner Up), Duane Derksen, Paul Ranheim, Tony Granato, and John Newberry.
