WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The Wisconsin DNR has listed much of Central Wisconsin in the “very high” fire danger category after nearly a dozen wildfires broke out in the area over the weekend.
State fire officials say a light snowpack combined with dry vegetation has made for dangerous conditions across much of the state.
Statewide there were at least three dozen wildfires reported as of Saturday evening.
Officials are expecting burning permits to be suspended in several counties later today.
The months of March, April, and May are traditionally considered wildfire season in the state, accounting for around 60% of the state’s yearly wildfires.
