ERIE, PA (WSAU) — It took overtime but the Badger women’s hockey team was able to claim their sixth national championship via a 2-1 win over the Northeastern Huskies in Erie, PA on Saturday.
Senior Daryl Watts netted the game-winner in OT, her third game-winning goal of the season, three minutes into the extra frame.
The Badgers and Huskies had played to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation. Both goals came within 40 seconds of each other in the third period.
Makenna Webster broke a 0-0 tie at the 11-minute mark in the 3rd. Just 39 seconds later the Huskies fought back to level on a goal by Chloe Aurard.
Kennedy Blair went the distance in net for the Badgers, making 24 saves.
With six national championships on their record, the Badgers are now tied with Minnesota for the most in the nation. Their nine appearances in the national championship game are also tied for the most in the nation.
The win was also Head Coach Mark Johnson’s sixth national title, all coming with the Badgers.
