The release states that the last retail tenant in the building closed its doors on Monday, effectively closing the mall in its entirety. The press release goes on to say, “A key part of downtown Wausau enters a new and exciting chapter.
“We extend our appreciation and gratitude to those companies that called Wausau Center Mall home, some since 1983. We also extend sincere appreciation to the patronage of the many people that visited the mall over the decades,”.
HOM Furniture located in the anchor tenant on the south side of the property will remain open along with the two parking ramps adjacent to the mall. Those looking to shop at HOM Furniture are recommended to park in the east parking ramp to access the store from its Forest Street entrance.
Several former retailer tenants have moved their operations. Buckle, Maurice’s, and Spencer Gifts have or will be relocating to Rib Mountain Drive. Reflexology Massage relocated to 315 North 3rd Street, downtown Wausau.
The first phase of demolition on the property is still scheduled for May according to mall owners WOZ. Plans for the property include an urban hub with housing, boutique retail, hospitality, and gathering spaces.
