WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — One year after she took the oath of office, Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg says it’s finally time to dive into one of the priorities she ran on.
Updating the city’s strategic plans.
“Policywise, COVID-19 has dominated. I mean that first go-around we were talking about swimming pools, we were talking about parks,” said Rosenberg. “I had a lot of big dreams coming in here- you know ‘we’re going to do strategic planning,’ and it’s taken a while to get here but we have our RFP’s back and we’re ranking them.”
While strategic planning may not sound like the most interesting thing that a city or local government can do, it is right in Rosenberg’s wheelhouse. She’s also excited to get the public involved as well in creative ways once it is safe to do so.
“I’m hopeful as we wind down the distancing and all of that, that we are going to have more meaningful conversations. I know people are deciding right now what is most important, and I hope that they have come to terms with the fact that engaging with your government is super important,” she said.
She’s most interested in hearing about what has kept people in Wausau through the pandemic, especially as more businesses turn to work-from-home models that allow employees to essentially work from wherever they can get an adequate internet connection.
That includes things like housing. “We have a lot of options, but maybe we don’t have the stuff that everyone wants. So, what are those things? What should the priorities of your local government be?
“We are more than just our amenities. We are neighbors,” she added.
And when it comes to how the city takes that feedback, she says don’t expect it to be by conventional forums. “Get ready for all kinds of cool things.”
Other topics Rosenberg discussed with WSAU’s Mike Leischner include:
Start of video- One-year checkup
7:30- RFP’s for the west side battery location just outside downtown
10:30- Retirement of Fire Chief Tracy Kujawa
13:30- Return of outdoor events with Wausau Events and what those may look like
