WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — A man will spend just over a decade behind bars after fatally hitting a bicyclist.
Zachary Koosmann, 27, was sentenced to 12 years in state prison for a charge of homicide by use of a vehicle while operating with a prohibited blood alcohol content. Koosmann was found guilty of the charge in January during a plea hearing where a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle was dismissed but read in.
Koosmann was accused of crashing his pickup into 43-year-old Melissa Piesik while she was cycling on Whitrock Avenue in Grand Rapids in August of 2019. Koosmann admitted to authorities he was the driver who hit Piesik and that he tried to give her medical aid after the incident. He was taken into custody that day on the scene.
