MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU-WDLB) –They are in no rush to name a new Chief of Police in Marshfield at this time.
The city’s Police and Fire Commission met this week the discuss the process of hiring a new top cop following the resignation of Rick Gramza amid sexual misconduct allegations. The city’s Human Resources director Jen Rachu says that could include using a search firm.
“Their entire [body] of work is based on the skill sets these positions would hold,” she said. “The other benefit that you would have with them is they probably have an established contact list of individuals who may be looking to advance into a position such as ours.”
But she adds those benefits don’t come free. Rachu says the price tag can run between $25,000 and $40,000 which caused some on the Commission to balk.
“I can well imagine what that’s going to look like in the paper and on the street,” said Gordy Earll. “I don’t care to go that route, I would prefer to have her [Rachu] do this.”
Others on the Commission would like to see internal candidates get a shot at the job. Still others said given the current state of the department, a wider search could be beneficial.
No immediate action was taken by the Commission. In the meantime, Pat Zaps will remain the interim Chief. He’s held that position since Gramza went on leave back in August.
President Randy Gershman says he would like to call a special meeting soon to further discuss the matter.
