WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — One of the four Democratic challengers for a Wisconsin Senate seat visited Central Wisconsin.
Current State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski met with the Hmong Young Professionals group at Lemongrass Fusion to discuss what they want to see happen in Washington as part of her statewide campaign tour. Godlewski says she launched her campaign to help get things done for Wisconsinites.
“As I was watching small businesses that were doing everything they could to survive this pandemic to keep their doors open as they’re critical to our economy. And Wisconsinites who were underemployed and unemployed through no fault of their own and were struggling to pay their bills. And yet our Senator in Washington, who’s taking a private plane from Oshkosh to Washington D.C., was saying you know what Wisconsinites don’t need any help.
“And I think that couldn’t be more further from the truth. … It’s clear that Ron Johnson is not only disconnected from Wisconsin. He’s disconnected from reality. And I think Wisconsinites deserve somebody better and somebody who has a proven record to get things done. That’s exactly what I’ve been doing whether it was my time at the Pentagon to even serving as State Treasurer, I’ve been getting things done,”.
With the primary field Democrat candidate heavy right now, Godlewski thinks her past experience running statewide campaigns will help her in the race. She mentions that of the four candidates currently announced she’s the only one that’s begun a statewide tour from Eau Claire to Milwaukee.
“Right before this I was in Rhinelander doing a community listening session. And we just started. I mean, if there’s something that I know as a 5th generation Wisconsinite, is that they want somebody in Washington that they can trust. And part of building that trust is making sure that we listen and make sure that I understand exactly what people are going through and what they need,”.
Godlewski says her campaign is mainly for the people of Wisconsin and no one else. “This is a people-centric campaign. I am running because I care so much about this state. I love this state. And we want to make sure that people know that we’re out there fighting for them. Which is why we are traveling and listening because the people will drive exactly what we’ll be doing,”.
Godlewski is one of four Democratic candidates for the race including Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson, Milwaukee Bucks Senior Vice President Alex Lasry, and Marshfield radiologist Gillian Battino. Current Senator Ron Johnson has not given any indication that he will seek a third term in Washington.
