APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Governor Tony Evers says vaccine hesitancy is a major hurdle to overcome in the state’s vaccination effort.
Evers spoke Wednesday during an appearance in Appleton saying that the state is doing a good job with COVID-19 vaccination, but that numbers have slowed.
“We’re doing a great job of getting shots in arms,” Evers said. “We’re plateauing now, though. No denying that.”
That has been attributed to a smaller pool of unvaccinated people–and vaccine hesitancy.
“There are people that are hesitant but there are also people that frankly aren’t engaged in any way with healthcare,” said Evers. “It’s hard to get them to a place to get shots.”
Evers says the vaccine won’t be mandated.
“Well that’s never gonna happen,” Evers told reporters. “I’d love to be able to take a magic wand and say everybody should get a shot, but first of all that would never happen. Second of all: we have to convince people of the wisdom of getting it.”
35% of Wisconsinites are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
