WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Wausau firefighters rescued a group of orphaned ducklings from a storm drain on Wednesday night.
At around 10 pm, the department went to rescue ducklings out of a storm drain when they made an unfortunate discovery. The mother duck was hit by a car and died next to the drain her babies were stuck in.
This left six orphan ducklings for the department to rescue, which they were able to do with a fishing net.
The fire department tweeted: “Duck rescues being performed by fire service professionals are not that uncommon. In the case of the duck rescue performed by Station 2 last night, they took it a little further than normal.
A local bird expert was called to take care of the orphans, but before that, Station 2 became the bird’s temporary home. Reportedly, by the time the expert could get to the scene medics had “gathered food and water and were caring for the ducklings as if they were family pets.”
