MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – We may have seen a decrease in drivers on the roads in 2020, but Wisconsin still saw increases in crashes and traffic fatalities.
In 2020, Sgt. Jennifer Austin with Wisconsin State Patrol says the state saw nearly 600 traffic-related fatalities, even with fewer drivers on the road.
“Less drivers on the roadway, yes, but they’re engaging in riskier behaviors.”
Wisconsin State Patrol attributes some of these traffic-related fatalities to increases in speed, increases in impaired driving, and a decrease in seatbelt-wearing.
Wisconsin State Patrol saw a 37% increase in motorcycle fatalities in 2020.
“This year’s starting off to be another beautiful year with an increase in motorcycle operation. With that, be aware of those motorcycles that are out there. Motorcycle operators, wear and utilize your helmets,” Sgt. Austin said.
In addition, it also saw an increase in fatalities of passengers not wearing a seatbelt.
Sgt. Austin says while fatalities have decreased on the interstate by 22%, it increased on local roadways by 17%.
On county roads, it increased by 22%.
Nick Jarmusz, Director of Public Affairs for AAA says while crashes and fatalities are up, there’s something that can be done about it.
“It’s not just the cost of doing business on the roads so to speak, or not just an inevitable part of driving. There are things that each and every one of us can do every time we get behind the wheel to reduce the chances that we will be involved in a crash.”
Officials recommend being fully rested while driving, not driving while impaired, obeying speed limits, staying focused, and wearing a seatbelt.
AAA also wants to remind drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.
