WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A slight change is being considered when it comes to renting out event spaces at Wausau School District buildings.
At the Wausau School Board’s Education and Operations Committee Meeting on Monday night, the board will be discussing adding a new clause to the District’s policy regarding the Use of District Facilities. The agenda item on the policy is adding two sections, one that reads “Any advertising/notice of event must contain this disclaimer clause; This event is not endorsed by the Wausau School District, nor does it necessarily represent the views of Wausau School District.
“It must be printed on any item of promotional material and it must be spoken on any promotion that has an audio component.” The second change to the policy reads, “The Wausau School District retains the right to alter the fee or cancel any event if evidence is presented that shows a discrepancy in the event holder’s description of the event and the actual event.”
The proposed changes likely stem from a May 22nd event where a group called “Every Black Life Matters,” held a workshop at Wausau East High School that caused concern in the community after their presentation to the County Board a few days before. At the County Board presentation leaders of the group spoke for over an hour sharing their criticism of abortion and race-based movements. At one point, they told the Board that Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg was “all in” on “exterminating black people.”
Along with the proposed changes to the policy, the meeting agenda includes a legal review of policies and practices for school districts as public forums. The review attached to the agenda recommends that districts can have some discretion on how their buildings can be used as public forums for presentations done by students, employees, and community members.
The Education and Operations Committee meeting is set for 5 p.m. in the Nicolson Board Room at the Longfellow Administration building.
