WESTON, WI (WSAU) — Businesses along Schofield Avenue in Weston will soon be changing their letterhead.
The Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Monday to change the name of the busy street to D.C. Everest Boulevard soon, a move aimed to create separation between the Village and the adjoining City of Schofield.
“I have been pushing for this name change for more years than what I even care to think about,” said Trustee Barb Ermeling. “Every time we [put this off] we are involving more businesses.”
She says her support comes from how confusing addresses along the street can be given the fact that Schofield Avenue runs through the city and into the village without changing names, adding that confusion can cost money in the long run.
Ermeling recounted interactions she’s had with friends who thought because a business was located along Schofield Avenue and because the nearest post office was in Schofield, that it was in Schofield when it was really in Weston. “Finally she asked me ‘well what’s the difference?’ So I explained to her that if you think you are in Schofield and you file your papers as though you are in Schofield, the Village of Weston loses [federal tax] money.”
Village President Mark Maloney noted that the recently opened oriental market in Weston goes by the name Schofield because of the street. Meaning some people could think that it’s located within the city of the same name when really it’s in the Village.
“They named it after the street. Maybe it would still be named after the street, maybe after Everest- I have no idea. But, they named it after the street. And I would have to have five, seven, ten businesses in that same dilemma.”
Maloney added that the village held a public information campaign following its incorporation to make sure residents knew where the boundaries were. He said as they draw closer to making the name change to D.C. Everest Boulevard a reality, they may need to do that again
Trustees also noted the change will tie Weston to the nearby D.C. Everest school district, which supports the move according to Village Administrator Keith Donner.
No timeline for when the change would become official was given following Monday’s vote, but the board noted that the Village has already begun paperwork with the county to facilitate the process.
