WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The 3rd annual Kickin’ it for the Kids kickball tournament returns to Athletic Park in Wausau this Saturday after a year off in 2020 due to COVID-19.
The event aims to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Wausau native Claire Hornby, who died after receiving treatment from the world-renowned facility.
“She helped it hit home a little more,” said Lynn. “Her mom is going to be out there on Saturday to give a speech to remind us why we are all here- doing a fun kids game, adult style, but all for the kids of St. Jude.”
The event will feature 16 teams playing in a double-elimination tournament. As has been the tradition, both Chandra and her morning show co-host Bryan Scott will have their own teams competing in the event along with others sponsored by local businesses and groups.
The tournament also has a twist- in addition to the championship trophy awarded at the end of the day, there is also a traveling Toilet Bowl trophy to the last-place team. That’s determined by a playoff between the first two teams eliminated- with the loser getting the title. A home run derby has also been added this year.
While all 16 teams have long been signed up, Lynn says there are still other ways for the community to take part. There will be raffle baskets, a 50/50 drawing, concessions, and other events for spectators to take part in as they watch the teams play on the field at Athletic Park.
Local musician Brad Emanuel will be playing from noon to 2 PM as well.
Lynn says the goal is to raise $30,000 this year, which is similar to what was raised in 2019 when the event was first held at Athletic Park. The tournament began in 2018 as an eight-team event in Weston.
