MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man will serve six months in federal prison for importing unapproved drugs from India and distributing them to customers through his insurance office.
Kenneth Zipperer was sentenced in a federal courtroom in Madison this week. The 54-year-old will also pay just over $480 restitution and $150,000 in fines, as determined by Judge William Conley.
The charges are the result of two guilty pleas by Zipperer to charges of one count of mail fraud and one count of money laundering. Those charges were part of a 26-count indictment that also included multiple charges of distributing misbranded prescription drugs without a written prescription or license to administer such drugs, concealment money laundering, and promotional money laundering.
According to investigators Zipperer was importing prescription medications from India that were not approved by the FDA for human consumption in the US. He then distributed them to his insurance clients through the office of Zipperer Financial LLC.
The US Postal Service, FDA, IRS, and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement were all involved in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Graber handled the prosecution.
