Aaron Judge hit two homers Saturday night, including the game-tying, two-run blast in the eighth, and Andrew Velazquez scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Javier Baez as the New York Yankees edged the host New York Mets, 8-7.
The Yankees snapped a seven-game losing streak and remained tied for the second American League wild-card spot with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays, who entered Saturday a half-game back of the Yankees, swept a doubleheader from the Baltimore Orioles.
The loss was the fourth in six games for the Mets, who entered Saturday four games behind the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres in the race for the second NL wild card. The Mets remained five games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East by virtue of the Braves’ 6-4 loss to the Miami Marlins.
The two teams stood alongside one another on the baselines in a show of New York unity during a pregame ceremony honoring the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Brewers 3, Indians 0
Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader combined for the second no-hitter in franchise history as the Brewers won their fourth straight by blanking host Cleveland.
Burnes (10-4) struck out 14 over eight innings and did not allow a baserunner until Myles Straw walked to lead off the seventh.
Cleveland struck out 16 times and was no-hit for the third time this season, a major league record.
It was also baseball’s ninth no-hitter this season, most in big league history after surpassing the eight thrown in 1884.
Giants 15, Cubs 4
Tommy La Stella went 3-for-6 with a home run and five RBIs to pace San Francisco’s win over host Chicago.
Brandon Belt added a home run and three RBIs for San Francisco, which won its sixth game in a row. The Giants will go for a three-game sweep over the Cubs in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
Willson Contreras went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Chicago at the plate. Ian Happ contributed a triple and an RBI for the Cubs, who have dropped three of their last four games.
Dodgers 5, Padres 4
Mookie Betts hit a tie-breaking three-run home run in the fifth inning and Walker Buehler pitched seven solid innings as host Los Angeles held on to defeat San Diego for the fifth straight time.
Gavin Lux added a pair of hits and drove in a run in his second game since returning from Triple-A, and Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth inning for his 32nd save. Los Angeles stayed 2 1/2 games behind NL West-leading San Francisco, while the Padres remained tied with Cincinnati for the NL’s second wild-card spot.
Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a home run and drove in three runs for the Padres, who lost for the fifth time in eight September games. Tatis and Manny Machado each had three hits. Buehler (14-3) gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
Rangers 8, Athletics 6
DJ Peters and Jonah Heim hit two-run home runs against Oakland’s beleaguered bullpen in a five-run eighth inning and Leody Tavares added a solo shot in the ninth for visiting Texas.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the A’s, who led 3-0 early and 6-2 when starter Cole Irvin was pulled after seven innings.
Brett Martin (4-4), who pitched a scoreless seventh, was credited with the win. Joe Barlow earned his fifth save with a one-hit ninth.
Red Sox 9, White Sox 8 (10 innings)
Travis Shaw hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning and had a three-run homer during a seven-run third inning, and Boston held off a rally by host Chicago.
Shaw’s single against White Sox reliever Mike Wright Jr. (0-1) plated Alex Verdugo from third base. Boston held an early 7-2 advantage after the third. Chicago rallied with five runs in the fourth as Luis Robert hit a two-out, bases-clearing double before Yoan Moncada tied it with an RBI double.
Red Sox reliever Garrett Whitlock (8-3) picked up the win after tossing a pair of scoreless innings. Josh Taylor picked up his first save of the season and the second of his career.
Blue Jays 11, Orioles 10 (Game 1)
George Springer’s two-out, two-run homer capped a four-run seventh inning and visiting Toronto rallied past Baltimore in the first game of a doubleheader.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Danny Jansen also homered for Toronto, which is in a battle for the second AL wild card.
Austin Hays extended his hitting streak to 17 games with two of Baltimore’s four home runs. Anthony Santander and Ryan Mountcastle also homered for the Orioles, and Pedro Severino had three hits.
Blue Jays 11, Orioles 2 (Game 2)
Toronto, held hitless for six innings, clubbed four homers in an 11-run seventh inning to complete a doubleheader sweep of host Baltimore.
Bo Bichette and Alejandro hit two-run homers and Marcus Semien and Teoscar Hernandez hit three-run shots in the big inning, making a winner of Trevor Richards (7-2), who pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Keegan Akin (2-9) allowed three runs on three hits in six-plus innings. He left after giving up a single, Bichette’s homer and a single to Hernandez in the seventh.
Phillies 6, Rockies 1
Jean Segura homered and singled, Brad Miller added a pinch-hit solo homer and host Philadelphia defeated Colorado.
Bryce Harper added a solo homer as Andrew McCutchen and Odubel Herrera each contributed two hits for the Phillies, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Odubel Herrera also had two RBIs.
Phillies starter Zack Wheeler tossed 6 2/3 innings and allowed four hits and one run with eight strikeouts and two walks. Wheeler (13-9) also recorded his 1,000th career strikeout.
Marlins 6, Braves 4
Bryan De La Cruz had three hits, including a tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning, helping visiting Miami to a win against Atlanta in the middle game of their three-game series.
Jesus Sanchez followed De La Cruz with another two-out blast off Atlanta reliever Richard Rodriguez (4-4). Eddy Alvarez hit his first major league homer earlier in the game for the Marlins.
Miami starter Elieser Hernandez took a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning, but departed after allowing three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Braves right-hander Charlie Morton was aiming to win at least 14 games for the fourth time in the past five seasons, but left with the score tied 3-3 after seven innings. He gave up six hits, struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.
Diamondbacks 7, Mariners 3
Daulton Varsho had three hits, including a double and home run, and drove in four runs as Arizona snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory against host Seattle.
Mitch Haniger and Jarred Kelenic went deep for the Mariners, who lost for the first time in five games with Arizona this season. Seattle dropped two games behind the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays in the race for the American League’s second and final wild-card playoff berth.
Right-hander Humberto Castellanos (2-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings to get the victory. He walked one and struck out four. Mariners right-hander Chris Flexen (11-6) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits over five innings. He walked two and fanned four.
Rays 7, Tigers 2
Joey Wendle had a triple and a home run, Dietrich Enns tossed four innings of hitless relief for his first career victory, and Tampa Bay topped host Detroit.
Wendle’s homer was his 10th of the season. Kevin Kiermaier supplied a double and triple, scored twice and drove in a run, while Brandon Lowe contributed two hits and drove in two runs. Chris Archer pitched the first four innings and gave up one run on two hits. Enns (1-0) struck out six during his stellar stint.
Robbie Grossman blasted his career-high 23rd home run for the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera added an RBI single but Detroit, which scored 10 runs in the series opener on Friday, was limited to three hits.
Angels 4, Astros 2
Left-hander Jose Suarez produced his second consecutive strong start before Los Angeles fended off a late rally in Houston.
Suarez (7-7), fresh off his first career complete game, limited the Astros to one run on three hits and three walks while pitching into the sixth inning. His seven strikeouts were one shy of his career high. Luis Rengifo knocked in three runs for the Angels, including a two-run homer.
Astros rookie Luis Garcia (10-7) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings. Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker posted two hits apiece in defeat.
Pirates 10, Nationals 7
Bryan Reynolds and Ben Gamel homered and Pittsburgh feasted on 10 walks in a win over visiting Washington.
Kevin Newman added an RBI double and Colin Moran smacked a pair of RBI singles for the Pirates, who have won four of five.
Pittsburgh starter Wil Crowe allowed three runs and four hits in four innings. He struck out six with two walks. Kyle Keller (1-1) pitched a scoreless sixth and Chris Stratton picked up his fourth save.
Twins 9, Royals 2
Jorge Polanco went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead a five-homer attack for Minnesota, which cruised to a victory over Kansas City in Minneapolis.
Byron Buxton, Nick Gordon and Max Kepler also homered for Minnesota, which evened the series at a game apiece and presented manager Rocco Baldelli with his 200th career victory. Buxton, Kepler and Ben Rortvedt each had two hits.
All five home runs by Minnesota came against Royals starter Brady Singer (4-10), who had allowed just nine home runs in 116 innings. Michael Pineda (6-8), making his first start since Aug. 13 after dealing with a mild left oblique strain, picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits over five innings.
Cardinals 6, Reds 4
Nolan Arenado drove in three runs with a triple and a homer to power St. Louis past Cincinnati.
Arenado’s two-run homer in the eighth inning broke the 4-4 tie and lifted the Cardinals to their third victory in four games.
Jonathan India and Nick Castellanos hit two-run homers for the Reds, who lost for the fourth time in six games.
