SCHOFIELD, WI (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS-93.9FM THE GAME) – Ty Strehlow is injured. And it leaves a huge hole for the Evergreens in Friday’s game against Wisconsin Rapids.
Ty is the team’s all-purpose yardage leader on offense, and the best slot receiver in the conference. He’s the fastest player. He’s the team’s punter. And punt-returner. And plackinging holder. And a stand-out defensive back. His absence impacts every aspect of the game.
Ty was injured on an uncalled late-hit out of bounds in the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to SPASH. If you were listening on the radio, you already know my opinon of the no-call. I’ve since seen video of the play, and I wasn’t wrong.
He’s tried to practice the last few days, and is much diminshed. I expect Ty will warm up for Friday night, and will be a game time decision. If I was going to guess, he probably won’t play. Ty is a college level recruit, and is the kind of player that you have to think about long-term.
The Everest-Rapids game is important for both teams; neither is assured of a playoff birth. The Evergreens are almost certain to make the post season with a win and a victory next week over last place Hortonville. Everest could still sneak in with a 4-4 record, depending on how many other teams are needed to fill out the state’s Division One bracket and how many others school have had canceled games.
Rapids, which used to be the lone option team in the old Wisconsin Valley Conference, is still almost completely run oriented. There are some games where they’ve had no passing yardage. Everest’s defense has been good against the run this year, but they’ve also been prone to mistakes and penalties.
Common opponents, which isn’t a reliable predictor of game outcomes, offers few clues on Friday night. Rapids has an upset win over Wausau West, a team that beat Everest on a late touchdown. But Everest was a much tougher opponent against Stevens Point, who beat Rapids by three touchdowns.
